The agent represents a local carrier in a city or town. It should normally represent more than one carrier: it can represent both stock and mutual companies. The Commission received by the local agent is obviously lower than those paid to general agents or regional. The insurance agent is a small local technical service.

These services are performed by the actual regional or general agent, or branch or home office. The local agent is essentially a salesman, his task is to gain customers and to provide estimates of insurance to its customers.
